One of the questions I get asked the most by visitors is, “Where’s the best place to eat in San Pedro?” It always makes me smile because my answer is never as simple as recommending one restaurant. Instead, I usually respond with another question: “How many days are you staying?” The reason is simple. There isn’t just one great restaurant on Ambergris Caye anymore. There are dozens, each with its own personality, atmosphere, and unforgettable flavors. In fact, I often joke that visitors would need a month on the island just to scratch the surface of everything our culinary scene has to offer.
Growing up in San Pedro, dining out was a much different experience. There were only a handful of restaurants around town, and everyone knew where to go depending on what they were craving. Some places were famous for their fresh seafood, others for their Belizean specialties, while a few became gathering spots where friends met after work to enjoy a cold Belikin and catch up on the day’s happenings. The choices were limited, but somehow that was part of the charm of living in a small island community.
Today, however, San Pedro has quietly transformed into one of Belize’s greatest culinary destinations, and I don’t think we stop often enough to appreciate just how remarkable that is. This little island, surrounded by the Caribbean Sea and only a few miles wide, offers a dining experience that rivals cities many times its size.
Culinary Diversity

One of the things I enjoy most is the incredible variety. On any given day, you can start your morning with a traditional Belizean breakfast of fry jacks and refried beans, stop for authentic Mexican tacos at lunch, enjoy sushi or Thai cuisine in the afternoon, and finish the evening with fresh seafood or an elegant Italian dinner overlooking the sea. If that’s not enough, there are Mediterranean restaurants, Argentine grills, Jamaican barbecue, gourmet burgers, cafés, smoothie bars, coffee houses, bakeries, pizzerias, beach bars, food trucks, and family-owned restaurants that have been serving generations of locals and visitors alike.
What amazes me isn’t just the number of restaurants. It’s the quality.
Over the years I’ve watched chefs become more creative, menus become more sophisticated, and restaurant owners constantly reinvent themselves. Competition has pushed everyone to improve, and the result has been a food scene that continues to surprise both visitors and residents. One restaurant introduces an exciting new concept, another responds with an innovative menu, and before long the entire island benefits from the healthy competition. Whether you’re looking for a quick lunch on your way to work or celebrating a special occasion with fine dining, San Pedro offers an experience that very few communities in Belize can match.
Of course, tourism deserves much of the credit for this incredible growth, but it isn’t the whole story.
San Pedro has become home to people from every district in Belize and from countries all over the world. Families have brought with them their traditions, recipes, and culinary influences, creating a community that is as diverse as the food it serves. Every culture that has made Ambergris Caye home has added another flavor to the island, enriching the dining experience for everyone. Our restaurants have become a reflection of who we are, a multicultural community where different traditions blend together while still preserving their unique identities.

What makes dining in San Pedro even more special is that it’s about much more than the food itself. Some restaurants overlook the Caribbean Sea, where diners can enjoy a meal while listening to the gentle sound of waves breaking against the shore. Others sit along the lagoon, offering spectacular sunsets that rival any postcard. There are rooftop restaurants with panoramic island views, cozy cafés tucked beneath swaying palms, lively beach bars where your feet rest in the sand, and hidden neighborhood favorites where the owners know many of their customers by name. Every restaurant tells a different story, and every meal becomes part of the San Pedro experience.
One thing I have noticed over the years is that the restaurant scene never stands still. Every year new establishments open their doors while longtime favorites continue finding ways to reinvent themselves. Young chefs arrive with fresh ideas, entrepreneurs take chances on unique concepts, and family recipes that have been passed down for generations continue attracting loyal customers. Many of today’s iconic restaurants started as small family businesses with nothing more than a dream, a few tables, and the determination to succeed. Watching those businesses grow alongside the island has been one of the great pleasures of documenting San Pedro over the past twenty-five years.

Perhaps that’s what makes our culinary scene so unique. It’s not simply about having dozens upon dozens of places to eat. It’s about the people behind them, the families who poured their savings into opening a small restaurant, the chefs who proudly prepare every dish, the servers who welcome guests like old friends, and the entrepreneurs who believed San Pedro could become something much bigger than anyone imagined.
Sometimes I think we take all of this for granted. Visitors travel thousands of miles specifically to experience our restaurants. Food bloggers and travel writers regularly feature San Pedro as one of Belize’s premier dining destinations, while many of us casually ask, “Where should we eat tonight?” as if having so many incredible choices is perfectly normal.
When I stop to think about it, I realize it really isn’t normal.
It’s another sign of just how much our island has grown.
The incredible variety of restaurants, cafés, bakeries, bars, and family kitchens scattered throughout Ambergris Caye tells a much bigger story than what’s on the menu. It speaks of entrepreneurship, diversity, creativity, and opportunity. It reflects a community that has welcomed people from around the world while never losing its Belizean roots.
If there is one thing San Pedro has become over the years, it is a place where people gather around a table, share stories, enjoy incredible food, and create lasting memories. And to me, that’s one more reason why this island has quietly evolved into something much greater than the little town many of us remember.
San Pedro has become a culinary capital on an island.
