The Republic of China (Taiwan) has donated 10,000 bags of rice to the Ministry of Human Development, Social Transformation and Poverty Alleviation through the “Taiwan Rice Donation for Humanitarian Relief” project. The donation, comprising five containers filled with 22-pound bags of rice was formally handed over to Minister of Human Development, Hon. Anthony Martinez, at ceremonies held on Wednesday, August 22, 2018 at the Port of Belize.
According to Ambassador of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to Belize, H.E. Charles Liu, the donation was made possible due to the bountiful harvest of rice in his country and the Taiwanese Government is happy to share with those in need in its sister country Belize.
In his remarks, Minister Martinez thanked the Government of Taiwan for its generosity and said that the rice will be distributed to over 800 governmental and non-governmental agencies and families, to the benefit of thousands of Belizeans countrywide. Recipients of the rice donation include clients of the Ministry of Human Development, the Ministry of Health for its hospitals, the Ministry of National Security, NEMO, Kolbe Foundation, The Inspiration Center, Helpage, Hand in Hand, Mercy Clinic, Salvation Army, the Mental Health Resource Center, and VOICE, in addition to various school feeding programs and children’s homes.
The rice donation is valued at US $125,000 and will be distributed countrywide after being cleared from customs later this week.
