Even though San Pedro is no longer the quiet little fishing village it once was, there are still beautiful reminders scattered around that take me right back to those simpler days. One of those places is the dock at Amigos del Mar Dive Shop. Every time I pass by, I’m filled with a wave of nostalgia; memories of carefree summers spent swimming off the piers, the sun beating down, the salt air in my lungs, and laughter echoing across the water.
My father was a teacher, so unlike some of my friends who spent their childhoods out at sea with their families, our time by the water was more limited, but that made it all the more special. Every moment near the sea felt like a gift, something to be cherished. I hold onto those memories tightly.
Tourism has certainly transformed our town. The sailboats we once watched drift across the horizon have mostly been replaced by larger dive boats, and the rhythm of the island has shifted. San Pedro has become a modern hub of growth and opportunity, something we’re proud of, but sometimes I still crave the slower pace and simpler pleasures of the past.
San Pedro Magic
Yet, despite all the change, if you take a walk along the beach, or stroll out onto a pier at sunrise or sunset, you can still feel it, that old San Pedro magic. The salt in the air, the cool sea breeze brushing your skin, the quiet hush of the waves, it all brings back the spirit of the fishing village we once were. And in those moments, I’m reminded that the heart of this island is still here, quietly beating beneath the surface.
