Did you know that one person out of the nine winners of the $1Mil Jackpot failed to claim his/her prize? I’m sorry for the person who may have lost his ticket or simply forgot to check if he won, but after a month of being left unclaimed, the winnings will be donated to charity.
Belize Government Lotteries Limited has confirmed that 8 out of the 9 winning tickets were successfully claimed and paid out, for a total of $888,888.88 already in the hands of lucky winners. Unfortunately, one winning ticket was never presented for redemption, and according to the rules printed on every ticket, winnings must be claimed within 30 days of the draw date or they are automatically forfeited. That means the unclaimed amount now stands at $111,111.11.
Jackpot Going to Charity
Normally, any unclaimed winnings would simply go back into BGLL’s general revenue. However, this particular jackpot game had something special attached to it. The profits from the Million Dalla Jackpot were supposed to go toward a charitable organization chosen by the Board of Directors. Even though the game itself did not end up making a profit this time around, BGLL has still decided that the entire unclaimed amount of $111,111.11 will be donated to charity. The Board is expected to decide on the recipient or recipients at their next meeting scheduled for mid-February.
BGLL also took the opportunity to remind everyone that profits from all of their games help fund important social programs here in Belize, including National Health Insurance, sports development, and other charitable causes that benefit communities across the country.
So while it’s unfortunate that one winning ticket was never claimed, it’s good to know that the money won’t go to waste and will instead be put back into helping Belizeans. And let this also be a friendly reminder to always double-check those tickets and claim your winnings on time, you never know when luck might be sitting right there in your pocket. 🍀
