San Pedro paused this weekend to celebrate a truly remarkable milestone. On Sunday, March 15, Mrs. Tomasita Gomez reached an extraordinary 100 years of life, a moment filled with pride, gratitude, and celebration for her family and the entire community that has been touched by her presence.
For her loved ones, this day was more than a birthday. It is a celebration of the matriarch of their family, a woman whose faith, strength, and devotion have guided generations. For San Pedro, it was an opportunity to honor someone who has played an important role in preserving the island’s traditions and religious heritage.
Affectionately known by many as the “Guardian of Traditions” and “Maestra de Resos,” Mrs. Tomasita has been a pillar of the San Pedro Roman Catholic Church community for decades, helping to safeguard and promote the religious practices that have long been part of the island’s cultural identity.

Tomasita Gomez Celebrated
Born on March 15, 1926, in the small fishing village of San Pedro, Tomasita grew up during a time when life on Ambergris Caye revolved around faith, family, and the sea. She attended San Pedro R.C. School, and it was clear early on that she possessed a special gift. At just eleven years old, she was selected to join the church choir because of her beautiful singing voice.
Her love for the church only grew stronger with time. She faithfully attended religious classes, hymn practices, and daily Mass during the month of May, traditionally devoted to the Virgin Mary. As a young girl, she began praying rosaries alongside the Sisters of Mercy from St. Catherine Convent who would visit San Pedro each year.
Over the years, her devotion blossomed into leadership. Tomasita became known across the island for guiding rosaries, novenas, and the litany of saints, helping keep many of San Pedro’s cherished religious traditions alive. Whether it was the Novena of Guadalupe, Stations of the Cross, Día de San Pedro processions, Las Posadas, or the Rosario de las Ánimas, Mrs. Tomasita was always there, leading the prayers and strengthening the faith of the community.

Her talents extended well beyond the church. At just fifteen years old, Tomasita discovered another passion, sewing. Completely self-taught, she quickly became San Pedro’s most sought-after seamstress. From simple everyday clothing to elegant wedding attire for brides and grooms, her skillful hands created garments that became part of many families’ most important moments.
Her entrepreneurial spirit didn’t stop there. She also crafted cloth flower arrangements which she sold in Belize City and eventually became the first person on the island to offer hair permanents and hair cutting for young ladies, adding beautician to her many talents.
Throughout her life, Mrs. Tomasita remained deeply committed to her faith and her community. She has been a member of The Central Association of the Miraculous Medal since 1952, dedicating countless hours to church service and community traditions.
Even after retiring at the age of 95 from her role as Maestra de Resos, she continues to serve as a treasured source of knowledge about the island’s past. Her remarkable memory and understanding of San Pedro’s history have contributed to several publications by the National Institute of Culture and History (NICH), helping preserve stories of the island for future generations.
As she celebrated a full century of life, Mrs. Tomasita stands as a living bridge between San Pedro’s past and present. Her life reflects the values that built this island community, faith, resilience, hard work, and love for family.
Reaching 100 years in good health is a blessing in itself, but doing so while leaving behind such a rich legacy makes the celebration even more meaningful.
On behalf of the entire community, we extend our warmest congratulations to Mrs. Tomasita Gomez on this incredible milestone. We know that her day was filled with love, laughter, and the appreciation she so richly deserves.
Happy 100th Birthday, Mrs. Tomasita. Your life is truly a blessing to San Pedro.
