San Pedro continues to face the growing challenge of sargassum, but the response across the island is showing something important, everyone is stepping up. With the Government of Belize on full alert and actively mobilizing resources to combat what is expected to be another heavy sargassum season, the private sector is also finding ways to take action within their own spaces.

Private Sector Innovation on the Beach
One standout effort is coming from Victoria House, which has recently invested in a new piece of equipment designed specifically to tackle the buildup of sargassum along its shoreline. The machine, called the Sargassum Slayer, was designed and built by a local Belizean company, highlighting not just innovation, but homegrown solutions to a problem affecting the entire region.

Sargassum Slayer Local Innovation

According to a recent post from Sargassum Slayer, Victoria House reached out shortly after the product was introduced publicly. After seeing a live demonstration, they quickly recognized its value.

“First delivery complete! We delivered our first Sargassum Slayer and trailer to Victoria House today… after a demonstration they saw the value of the system,” the company shared. “We have one more thing we are working with them on that will be another game changer in sargassum removal.”

It’s an encouraging sign, not just for Victoria House, but for the island as a whole, that local innovation is beginning to play a bigger role in managing the issue.

Ongoing Beach Restoration Efforts
At the same time, government and local authorities continue their work to protect San Pedro’s shoreline. Belize Rural South Area Representative Hon. Andre Perez, along with the San Pedro Town Council, are actively engaged in beach restoration efforts in the Boca Del Rio Park area.
Teams on the ground are working to:

  • Replenish sand along eroded sections
  • Stabilize vulnerable shoreline areas
  • Install protective measures to slow ongoing erosion

These efforts are part of a broader, coordinated approach that brings together government support, Town Council resources, and input from local stakeholders, all aimed at preserving beach access and protecting one of the island’s most valuable natural assets.

Sargassum is not a problem that can be solved by one group alone. It requires coordination, innovation, and shared responsibility. From national-level planning and municipal cleanup strategies to private investments like the Sargassum Slayer, San Pedro is showing what a united response looks like. The challenge remains constant, but so does the effort; and as both public and private sectors continue to adapt and respond, there is growing hope that the island can better manage the impact, protecting not just its beaches, but the tourism industry and community that depend on them.

San Pedro is in the fight. And it’s not backing down.
