The race for the San Pedro Town Council is beginning to take shape as three individuals have publicly announced their intention to run for Mayor in next year’s municipal elections. Four Mayoral Candidates: Incumbent Mayor Gualberto “Wally” Núñez has confirmed he will seek another term under the People’s United Party (PUP), while the United Democratic Party (UDP) has officially endorsed Joseph “Joe” Elijio as its mayoral candidate. Joining the race as an independent candidate is Celestino “Tino” Tzul, who will run under his newly formed The New Era Movement; also an independent runner is Abner Bacab. With several months still remaining before voters head to the polls, the campaign season is expected to intensify as each candidate presents their vision for the future of San Pedro.

Wally Nuñez Seeks Another Term
Current Mayor Wally Núñez has announced that he will seek re-election as the People’s United Party’s candidate, hoping to continue the projects and initiatives undertaken during his administration.
Under Nuñez’s leadership, the San Pedro Town Council has focused on infrastructure improvements, beach restoration, traffic management, environmental initiatives, public spaces, and community development. As the campaign progresses, residents will undoubtedly evaluate the accomplishments of the current administration while considering the challenges that still remain.
UDP Endorses Joseph “Joe” Elijio
The United Democratic Party has officially introduced Joseph “Joe” Elijio as its mayoral candidate for San Pedro Town. The endorsement was made by Belize Rural South UDP Caretaker Senator Gabriel Zetina, who praised Elijio’s experience in local government and his longstanding involvement in the community.
Elijio previously served as a three-term Town Councillor and is recognized for his ability to communicate with the island’s diverse population, speaking English, Spanish, Creole, and Garifuna.
Accepting the nomination, Elijio said his decision to run stems from his desire to see change in the way San Pedro is governed. He pledged that, if elected, his administration would focus on improving the quality of life for residents while promoting greater consultation, accountability, and community participation in local government. The UDP says its campaign will emphasize direct engagement with residents and policies designed to address the everyday concerns facing the island.
Tino Tzul Launches Independent Bid
Businessman Celestino “Tino” Tzul has also entered the mayoral race, announcing his intention to run as an independent candidate under The New Era Movement. In a public statement, Tzul described himself as a hardworking entrepreneur who has spent years building his businesses and investing in his future. He shared details about his personal investments and financial independence, saying he wanted residents to know he is entering politics to serve, not for personal gain.
“My team and I really have a heart for this island,” Tzul stated. “We are coming together to put in the work that is desperately needed.”
He also expressed concern that many capable community members choose not to enter public service because of negativity surrounding politics. Tzul says he hopes to inspire a new generation of leaders built on honesty, integrity, and service. Another key part of his platform is increasing the participation of women in leadership. Through The New Era Movement, he says he has actively encouraged women of all ages to become involved in politics, believing their leadership is essential to building stronger communities.
Abner Bacab Enters the Race as an Independent
Another familiar name in local politics has also entered the mayoral race. Abner Bacab has announced that he will once again contest the municipal elections as an independent candidate. Bacab noted that this will be his third time seeking elected office, having previously contested the mayoral race once before as well as the Belize Rural South seat for Area Representative.
A longtime community advocate, Bacab says his continued participation reflects his commitment to offering residents an independent alternative outside of the country’s traditional political parties. As the campaign unfolds, he is expected to present his vision and proposals for addressing the issues facing San Pedro and improving the quality of life for island residents.
An Important Election Ahead
Although the municipal elections are still months away, the announcements signal the beginning of what is expected to be an active campaign season for San Pedro. As one of Belize’s fastest-growing municipalities and the country’s leading tourism destination, San Pedro faces important issues including infrastructure, traffic management, environmental protection, housing, public safety, sanitation, and sustainable development.
With three candidates already entering the race and the possibility of additional names emerging in the coming months, voters will have the opportunity to hear different ideas and visions for the future of La Isla Bonita before making their decision at the polls next year.
