It’s amazing how much this corner of San Pedro has changed over the years. Long before the boardwalk and all the activity we see today, this area (called the Embarcadero) looked completely different. The San Pedro Sports Complex wasn’t even an idea yet. Instead, there was an open football field known to every local player as Saca Chispas. Half of it was grass, the other half was bare dirt, but that never stopped countless football matches and unforgettable afternoons with friends.
Take a closer look at the waterfront behind the field. Those weren’t marinas or fancy docks. They were simple wooden shacks built by fishermen who tied up their boats there after long days on the sea. Every morning and afternoon, they returned with the catch of the day, bringing fresh seafood straight from the Caribbean to the island.
The Embarcadero Today
This photo captures a San Pedro that was still deeply connected to its fishing roots. The waterfront served hardworking fishermen, the football field belonged to the community, and development had yet to transform this side of town.
Today, the Embarcadero area has become one of the busiest and most recognizable spots on Ambergris Caye. The boardwalk welcomes residents and visitors alike, the Sports Complex hosts sporting events and celebrations, and the surrounding area continues to grow with businesses and activity.
Looking at this photograph, it’s hard to imagine just how much has changed. Yet beneath all the development lies the same spirit that has always defined San Pedro, a hardworking fishing community that continues to evolve while holding onto its history.
