When I first heard the news that the San Pedro Christmas Boat Parade was making a comeback this year after a five-year hiatus, I couldn’t believe it. I’m pretty sure the entire island of Ambergris Caye shared the same sense of excitement and disbelief. For years, the boat parade had been a cherished holiday tradition, and its absence left a noticeable gap in our festive season. But this year, the Christmas magic was reignited, and it was everything we hoped for—and more. (Last parade was in 2019)
The Christmas Boat Parade has been a hallmark of the holiday season on Ambergris Caye since it first began in 2006. It was a time when locals and tourists alike came together to celebrate the season in a uniquely San Pedro way—with boats decked out in dazzling lights, playing festive music, and spreading Christmas cheer across the water. For many, it wasn’t just a parade; it was the kickoff to the holiday festivities. Tourists even planned their vacations around the event, making it a key highlight of their trips to Belize.
Triumphant Return of Christmas Boat Parade
This year, the Christmas Boat Parade made its triumphant return, and the entire community was abuzz with anticipation. And let me tell you, it did not disappoint. With 26 participating boats, this year’s parade was one of the largest and most spectacular to date. Each boat was uniquely decorated, some with intricate light displays that danced to music, others with festive themes that brought Santa Claus, reindeer, and even tropical holiday vibes to life. It was pure magic to watch them glide across the water, lighting up the night with their brilliance.
What made this year’s revival even more special was how it all came together. The San Pedro Tour Operators Association, in collaboration with the San Pedro Town Council, Hol Chan Marine Reserve, My Lights, Hon. Andre Pérez, and the Belize Tourism Board, worked tirelessly to bring the event back. It was no small feat, especially given the short timeline they had to organize it. Their efforts paid off in spades, and the joy on everyone’s faces was proof of just how much this event means to the community.
I could not be home for the parade, but looking at all the images and videos being posted online, people standing on the shore and watching the parade, it was great to see the entire island having a great time. The lights, the music, the laughter of children, and the cheers of the crowd all brought back memories of past parades. It reminded me of the warmth and togetherness that this event fosters, something that feels even more precious after the challenges of the past few years. This year’s Christmas Boat Parade wasn’t just a return to tradition; it was a celebration of resilience and community spirit. It was a reminder of the magic that happens when people come together to create something truly special; much thanks to the San Pedro Tour Operations Association. As I watched the final boat glide by, its lights reflecting on the water, I felt a renewed sense of gratitude for our island and its incredible people.
The San Pedro Christmas Boat Parade is back, and I can only hope it’s here to stay. Here’s to many more years of lights, music, and Christmas cheer lighting up our beautiful island. If you missed it this year, be sure to mark your calendar for the next one—it’s a holiday experience you won’t want to miss.
