San Pedro High School’s Milestone 50th Graduation

It was a bittersweet evening attending the 50th Graduation Ceremony of San Pedro High School. As I sat among proud parents, family members, teachers, alumni, and friends, a flood of emotions came over me. I felt immense pride seeing my alma mater reach such a momentous milestone. I was excited for the 153 graduates crossing the stage that evening. I was impressed by the accomplishments of my “not-so-little” high school. I found myself nostalgic for the wonderful years I spent there. And at the same time, I felt a deep sadness that my father was not there to witness it all.

Then again, he witnessed so much of San Pedro High School’s history.

My father, Angel Nunez, dedicated his life to education on Ambergris Caye. As one of the founders of San Pedro High School and its principal for 31 years, he helped shape the institution into one of the most respected schools in Belize. He was often referred to as the Father of Education in San Pedro, a title earned through decades of service, leadership, and genuine care for his students.

Even today, I am constantly reminded of the impact he had. Former students, many of whom I have never met, often share stories about how he helped them through difficult times, encouraged them to stay in school, guided them toward opportunities, and inspired them to become better versions of themselves. Every story fills me with gratitude and reminds me of the remarkable man he was. I am immensely honored and proud to be his son.

As I watched the graduates receive their diplomas, I couldn’t help but think about how much San Pedro High School has grown. My graduating class in 1994 consisted of just 36 students. This year, 153 graduates crossed the stage as members of the school’s historic 50th graduating class.

Guest Speaker Wilema Alamilla

Guest Speaker Wilema Alamilla Gonzalez, valedictorian of the Class of 1990, delivered an inspiring address that reflected on the school’s 50-year legacy of shaping leaders, professionals, and citizens. She spoke about the importance of discipline, resilience, and integrity, reminding graduates never to underestimate the significance of emerging from a small town and a small school.

Her message encouraged graduates to carry both their education and character proudly, to respect themselves and others, to recognize those who helped shape their journey, and to live fiercely, love deeply, and serve others. It was a message that resonated not only with the graduates but with everyone in attendance.

Principal Conchita Flota’s address centered on transition, perseverance, achievement, and legacy. She proudly reported that San Pedro High School graduated 153 students this year, with an impressive 101 honor roll students and two graduates achieving a perfect 4.0 GPA. She also reflected on her own historic milestone as the school’s first female principal, describing it as a significant transition for both herself and the institution.

San Pedro High School’s Continued Progress

Mrs. Flota highlighted the school’s continued progress toward a more digitally integrated curriculum while maintaining a strong focus on competency-based education. She also shared exciting developments, including the launch of a Tourism Program in partnership with the Belize Tourism Board, which will help prepare students for careers in Belize’s most important industry.

One of the most memorable parts of her speech was her reflection on the mindset of this graduating class. She explained that the year evolved from simply trying to get through challenges to creating a lasting legacy. As the school’s 50th graduating class, these students carried the weight of great expectations and rose to the occasion by redefining what it means to be a San Pedro High School Shark.

She acknowledged the unique challenges many students face while growing up on Ambergris Caye. Many balance family responsibilities, part-time jobs, rigorous academic schedules, and the emotional demands of living in a fast-paced community. Yet despite moments of exhaustion and self-doubt, they persevered.

“There were days of exhaustion, there were moments of doubt,” she said. “But whenever the journey grew steep, our faculty stood as anchors, our parents provided the wind, and our students dug their heels in. You did not break—you broke through.” It was one of those moments that drew applause throughout the auditorium.

“The trials are behind you, the transition is complete, and tonight we claim the triumphs,” she told graduates, emphasizing that their success was the result of discipline, resilience, determination, and support from those around them.

In closing, she reminded the graduates that their greatest achievement was not simply earning a diploma but developing the character, strength, and perseverance that carried them through the past four years.

“You are now part of a 50-year legacy of excellence,” she said. “Be bold, be resilient, and step confidently into a future of absolute triumph.”

As the ceremony came to an end and graduates celebrated with family and friends, I couldn’t help but reflect on how far San Pedro High School has come. From its humble beginnings to becoming a cornerstone of education on Ambergris Caye, the school has touched thousands of lives over the past five decades.

Fifty graduating classes. Fifty years of memories. Fifty Five years of shaping the future of our island. And judging by the Class of 2026, the future looks very bright indeed.
