Healthy smiles, Happy Children! A team of doctors are at the San Pedro Smile Center giving free dental checkups to children. The free checkups are available for children ages 4-12 and the doctors are at the San Pedro Smile Center Too at the Holy Cross Anglican School.
Joining Dr. Mark Johnson this year are Dr. Stephen and Susan Bender of Iowa City, Iowa, Dr. Paul and Linda Rogow of Jackson, Minnesota, Ms. Susan Halek of Coon Rapids, Minnesota and Mrs. Bridgette Cooper of Mankato, Minnesota.
Services being offered at the clinic are fillings, cosmetic dentistry, cleaning and fluoride treatments. The volunteer doctors are all general dentists and are providing full services to their patients.
The Smile Clinic first started in 2005 at the San Pedro Poly Clinic after which Dr. Efrain Cima took over the clinic in 2007. In July of 2007 the Smile Clinic Too was opened at the Holy Cross Anglican School and volunteers come to the island to offer their services to the children of La Isla Bonita.
“It is really great to see these children year after year,” commented Dr. Johnson. “We have seen an overall improvement on the children’s teeth and education in dental care and their oral health has been improving significantly.”
Children between the ages of 4 and 12 are welcomed but a parent or guardian are asked to be present to sign papers. Doctors will be attended until Thursday, January 26, 2012 and will be back again from February 6 – 9.
Dr. Johnson would like to thank Holy Cross Anglican School for hosting them, Maya Island Air for providing discounted air fare, Cholo’s Golf Cart Rental for discounted rates on cart rentals, Conch Shell Inn and Dr. Efrain Cima.
