Anti-Bullying Awareness Month a Success, Ends with 5K Marathon

Dear San Pedro Community,

On behalf of the San Pedro High School, I would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to all persons who assisted us in making our bullying awareness month, under the theme “Make a Noise about Bullying” a success. For three of our biggest events, which included a poster competition, a school assembly and our final event, a 5K marathon, we received gracious support from community members.

For the poster competition, two judges were tasked with selecting the first, second and third place winners from 20 entries. The judges were distinct community members: Mrs. Melody Wolfe, a local artist, and Mr. Shamir Guerrero, a graphic designer, who also designed the fliers for the 5K marathon. As for the “Make a Noise about Bullying” assembly, we welcomed three other judges from the community; we had two alumni from San Pedro High, Ms. Lisette Graniel, and Mr. Francisco Mendez, and we also had our past principal, Mr. Angel Nunez.  The event was successful, and the winners are as follows:

First Place: Esther Galeano and Rose Romero
Second Place: Camryn Briceno
Third Place (tie): Erika Lopez, and Divya Wadwha

The biggest event was the “Make a Noise about Bullying” 5K Marathon. This event received immense support from the community, and we would like to give a very special thanks to the San Pedro Town Council. In particular, we would like to thank Mr. Tito Alamilla, Mr. Shamir Guerrero, and also Mr. Chris Nuñez, from the San Pedro Traffic Department, all who helped with the logistics of planning and organizing the event.

Equally important, we must thank all the businesses who donated prizes for all 12 winners of the marathon. Our most generous sponsors were Ramon’s Village Divers, Elvi’s Kitchen and Mahogany Bay Villas. Other very kind sponsors were Searious Adventures, Castillo’s Hardware, Studio 93, Blue Water Grill, The Belize Chocolate Company and LC Distributors. Without the support and contributions of the above mentioned business establishments we would not be able to award all of our winners.

Special thanks must be given to Mr. Bob Gabourel who served as an official along with two staff members, Mr. Paul Kelly and Ms Yeseni Torres and two community members, Ms. Michelle Nunez (Ms. San Pedro 2014-2015) and Ms. Melissa Guerrero in recording the official scores of the race.

Last, but certainly not least, we must thank everyone who came out the day of the marathon to show their support for this serious issue that can affect children, young people, and even some adults. Namely, we want to thank the students and staff from San Pedro High School who participated, and we also want to acknowledge the presence of the members of Crossfit- San Pedro who had the largest representation as an organization outside of the San Pedro High School. We also had the participation of members from two other fitness communities, which were Cardio Dance, as well as W.O.D. Zone.

My heart is filled with gratitude, and for all those who are against bullying, in all its forms, know that at San Pedro High, we are working arduously to ensure that we address the issue. It is not an easy task, but with more awareness around the issue, the more support we will to help prevent it and truly “Make a noise about Bullying.”

Sincerely,
Alexis Guerrero,
Event Organizer/San Pedro High School Staff Member
