It’s been a couple years since we’ve celebrated Halloween with our fur babies and shelter animals. We don’t want to wait another one, so we will hold our Halloween Pet Costume Contest virtually this year! Dress your pet to impress to win one of our amazing prizes! Contest is open to any type of pet (even iguanas, birds and rabbits) Once you enter make sure to share your photo on social media and start working for those votes! History – Saga Humane Society was founded in 1999 to monitor and control the stay cat and dog populations on Ambergris Caye. Saga also handles adoptions, fostering and improves the general health and well being of both domestic and wild animals on Ambergris.
NGO – Saga Humane Society is a non-profit, non-governmental organization, established to prevent animal cruelty and replace it with kindness to all animals. Saga, a full service hospital, with a pharmacy, and provides medical care and shelter to animals in need and subsidized veterinary care for low-income families.
Stats – Due to the pandemic and complete financial devastation for months in Belize, many families needed extra assistance to care for pets putting additional strain on our already strapped humane society. SAGA provided free vet service for 171 Island pets in 2020. The shelter also got maxed out on strays. With 60+ animals needing foster care or permanent homes and a cost of sheltering $2,000 – $2,500 USD per month, this organization needs our help. (Note that cost does not include regular procedures such as spaying or neutering, tests, vaccines, or any other standard animal treatments.)
Education – Saga provides an ongoing humane education program to the island. Helping people understand the benefits of spaying and neutering as well as proper pet care.
Schedule animal time – Whether you’re on vacation living on Ambergris, join the Saga volunteer dog walkers or go play with the kittens, you will be glad you did and the animals love the attention.
