Trying "Everything Asian" at Saga's Cook Off!

By: Sofia Muñoz

The San Pedro Saga Humane Society has been around since 1999 and its mission is promoting kindness and preventing cruelty to all domestic and wild animals and also shelters and homes stray animals. It is a non-profit organization and solely depends of donations and fundraisers.

One of their most popular and favorite fundraiser events is their monthly cook-offs. This year Saga will be holding a monthly cook-off where each month will feature a different theme and the recipes will become a part of a cookbook that will be available for sale at the end of the year.

The first cook off for the year was an Italian theme and this month’s cook off was “Everything Asian”! Dorian’s Angels have always enjoyed part-taking in the cook-offs and this month was no exception. Delsie, Perlita and I headed to Tackle Box Bar & Grill last night ready to sample ‘everything Asian’.

With just $10 per person to sample all the entry dishes, we got our tickets and headed to the serving table. There were a total of seven entries and they all looked delicious; Asian Pork Sliders, Chicken & Spinach Fritter with mango chutney, Shrimp Lo-mein, Sweet and Sour Wings, Vietnamese Sample: bbq pork/shrimp salad rolls, Japanese Sampler: crab cali roll – smoked salmon – pork dumpling and Sake (Japanese alcoholic beverage made from fermented rice).

All of the entries were unique and all were finger licking good. It was very difficult to decide which one we liked the most; nevertheless we each casted our votes for our favorite dish. The winners for the Asian cook off were 1st Place: Laura Sutten – Pork Sliders and  2nd Place: Kevin Urbina of Tackle Box – Shrmip Lo-mein.

We sure had a good time at this month’s cook off and we are certainly looking forward for those yet to come. So if you missed this one, make sure you attend next month’s cook off and even enter the competition with a great dish and have a chance to win fabulous prizes. Who knows, you can even have your recipe in the cookbook which will be on sale at the end of the year!
