I'm Ready for Lobster Season!

Just those two words get my mouth watering! Lobster Season! YUM! But I must admit that I was not a big lobster fanatic until I began judging at the Lobsterfest’s Best Dish competition. I have had the privilege of being invited to judge for the past couple of years now and have come to sample almost all the Lobster Dishes imaginable! Nawh!!! There’s gotta be more out there for me to try. Rebecca, if you are reading this – hint, hint – Ambergris Today would love to judge this year once again! 🙂

So having tried all these wonderful lobster dishes that are prepared by fantastic restaurants from chef all around the island, I have developed a taste and love for lobster. How can anybody not fall in love with the juicy and succulent Spiny Lobster of Belize!

It’s a family affair when it comes to the opening of Lobster Season. Father and son, cousins, even sisters and mothers get together to prepare for the first day’s haul. Family members pull together and head out to their special ‘lobster spots’ (nowadays so easy to find with GPS); they call other family and friends to help out or enjoy a day out at sea.

Beside the lobster traps, catching those fast buggers takes some very special skills, or they just get away from you. While the expert fisherman (or “fisherwoman”) is skin diving, hooking those lobsters, assistants on the sea surface gather those that have been hooked (paralyzed) and they hand those over to others on the boat. Like clockwork, this system makes for a very efficient and productive day of lobster fishing. Then come the removal of the tails and their proper cleaning.

FUN! And then lobsters on the plates of everybody and every restaurant in town! And the San Pedro Lobsterfest celebrates the opening of Lobster Season in due time, right when it opens and lobster aplenty. The weeklong celebration is a big draw for tourist alike and the event has even made it into Frommer’s “300 Unmissable Events and Festivals Around the World” guidebook. (Read more on that HERE)
