A few months back I posted an article disclaiming a line that a lot of people like to use: “San Pedro is too Expensive”. Compared to my travels in other areas, vacationing in San Pedro/Belize is not very expensive but rather quite affordable for that matter. You can read more on that HERE.
Another expression that I keep hearing a lot and that I have a beef with anybody saying is this one: “San Pedro has lost its charm that it had 25 years ago.” I totally disagree with this one too. Why? Because although our island community is comparable to other bigger and fast-paced towns and even cities in the country, it still is a place where you can come to relax and experience the old island charm and laidback lifestyle which everybody seeks and desires to get away to.
I do catch myself saying that I wish I could go back in time to the San Pedro I knew growing up. There is so much nostalgia in knowing how much smaller and quainter my island home was. I know that our town has progressed much and things have changed drastically. However, this does not mean that we have lost our island charm.
I believe that we are so busy with our hectic schedules of everyday life that we fail to stop and look around to absorb the island charm we are surrounded by; besides, we are used to seeing it every day. Downtown San Pedro is a bit busy, I won’t lie, but there is a still lot that has stayed the same throughout the years. Take a closer look at how many old buildings are still standing next to the new concrete and modern ones. You will be surprised! I started counting the other day and there are still plenty. Some still have their old rustic look, while others have a great paint job that help them stand out amongst the others.
I love the fact that San Pedro, Ambergris Caye is big enough to sustain both the fast-paced life with all the commodities of a large town/small city and that of a quiet and laid back island community. When we take a break from it all, it is easy to find a quite beach where you can relax in a hammock or beach lounge chair. You can easily find a cozy spot at the end of a pier to snap a few photos or engage in romantic conversation.
It is so easy to stroll into a local bar to relax with friend enjoy delicious cocktails and ceviche. How about jumping into a boat or canoe to hang out by the reef to inhale the fresh Caribbean breeze? Well that too. You can even visit a friend’s house located north or south of town that is far away from downtown’s speed. You can stroll along the beach and enjoy the scenic view of fishermen paddling or sailing away to their fishing grounds as well as marvel at seagulls, pelicans and the amazing frigate birds hunting for their daily food.
In the afternoons, you can take photos besides fishermen and tourist guides cleaning their day’s catch to take home for a delectable dish. Yes, San Pedro Ambergris Caye still offers you amazing sunrises but you have to wake up early to enjoy or stay up late to welcome it anywhere along our 30 miles of beach front.
