Press Release – Ambergris Caye Local Building Authority – February 26, 2008 – A temporary moratorium is in place on all applications seeking approval for the construction of piers on the island. The proliferation done in complete disregard to due process and in relocation of criteria has given cause for great concern to the San Pedro Town Council (SPTC).
The San Pedro Town Council in conjunction with the DOE will shortly start an evaluation process leading to the rationalization for future pier development. The current pier density has now exposed the island to serious beach erosion, navigational safety hazards, fire peril, and visual pollution of our island frontage, not to mention the obstruction of public use of the beach.
Any pier owner that fails to meet the San Pedro Town Council design criteria (obtainable at the SPTC office) will be asked to modify their structures; failure to comply will result in it being done on their behalf and to their account.
Further more, any structures that impede pedestrians or traffic on public beaches, will be removed preferably by the owners. All existing piers are open to public use between the hours of 6:00am to 6:00pm regardless of who built them. The public is asked to report any restrictions of ordinary passage to all beaches on the island.
