San Pedro High Champions Again

San Pedro High School continues its winning streak in sports and academics in competitions around the country under their new principal, Mr. Emil Vasquez. Not satisfied enough with their wins in Math Olympiad, Science Food and Nutrition Competition, Volleyball, and basketball, this time they went with two first place trophies, Males and Females in the Northern Regional Football competition.

SPH girls first took on Belize High School of Agriculture into a scoreless first half but after some “Pep Talk” and strategic planning from coaches Froyland Gilharry and Mr. Arcurio, the girls went on with reinvigorated spirit to take on the Corozal girls. The first goal was scored by Daisy Menjivar and Yamily Vasquez secured the game with a power shot that gave them the 2 – 0 sweet victory.

After defeating Orange Technical School by a score of 3 – 2, Escuela Mexico thought they were ready for the Island Girls. However, to their surprise and San Pedro’s joy, Superstar Daisy Menjivar did it again in just five minutes into the game to give SPH the momentum. And then later on Yamily Vasquez added two more goals. Yamily’s third goal left all the fans with wide open mouths when she shot a cannon ball from about 40 yards- close to the mid-field. She was named the Most Valuable Player (MVP) as she takes the Island Girls into the National Competition.

In the Male competition, San Pedro High first took on Corner Stone High in a game that left the fans breathless. At the end of regulation time and extra time, and still a nil – nil draw, they went into penalty kicks. During this exciting moment, the heroic keeper Rony Mejia stopped two penalties to give the Island boys a pass into the finals.

The final match was a classic between SPH and their old and dreaded rivals- Orange Walk Technical. This match was exciting up to the final seconds with OWT scoring first, but the Island Boys never gave up the pressure. The mid fielders kept mounting the pressure until later in the game when a defender had to use his hands to stop the ball. This time it was team captain Hazael Requena who took the shot for a 1 – 1 draw. After overtime and still a draw it was time for 10 penalty shots. AGAIN the flying Rony Mejia stopped two penalties to give SPH their sweetest victory ever against their old buddy rivals and their first opportunity to bring a national trophy to the Island.

A special invitation is extended to all parents, teachers and fans to travel with the teams to Belize City for the National Championship on February 13 and 14.
