The San Pedro 5-a-side court was converted to a basketball court as San Pedro hosted the first ever semi-pro basketball game on Saturday, March 18. The grounds were packed and the bleachers were at maximum capacity as basketball fans went to cheer for San Pedro’s first semi-pro basketball team.
And the fans had reason to be happy and cheer as the Tiger Sharks took the win against Corozal’s Northern Uprising 79 to 66. It was an exciting match with Northern Uprising never taking the lead; the Tiger Sharks dominated the game.
BasketballDuring half time at the game Jairo Sandoval, a child with a disability and receiving therapy services through CARE Belize, was presented with an autographed basketball from the San Pedro Tiger Sharks. Kathleen MacKay Walker, physical therapist for CARE Belize on the island, told Ambergris Today that young Jairo mentioned to her that he would like to play basketball, but did not have a ball. She figured that playing basketball would be therapeutic to Jairo’s right arm which he cannot use at the moment. With the assistance of team member Rico Black, Jairo was presented with an autographed basketball of the entire Tiger Sharks team.
Jairo Sandoval, he is the son of Daisy Howe and he has also been recently selected to go to Shriner’s hospital in the U.S. for further testing and possible treatment for his disability.
