Dorian's Angels Start Celebrating with the Garifuna

The San Pedro Garifuna Council has kick started its celerations that will lead to Garifuna Settlement Day, which is a public and bank holiday in the country of Belize. Today, November 17, 2010, the Garifuna are entertaining with live drumming under the palapa at Central Park and Dorian’s Angels set out to have some fun! Perlita took to the drums, Delsie the Maragas (or Shaka) and Sofia took to dancing. With the help of the Garifuna Council members, the Angels were able to perform and dance the traditional Paranda, Punta and Jankunu of the Garifuna. Tomorrow the Garifuna will hold their 3rd Annual Island Battle of the Drums with cultural presentations, cultural food and a Jankunu Competition with a block party at Central Park. Garifuna Settlement Day is marked with the reenactment of the arrrival of the Garifuna at Central Park at 6a.m. followed by a celebratory Mass at the Roman Catholic Church at 7a.m. and an all day Beach Party at Central Park.
