Carnaval Day 3: A Princess, Kalimba, Danza Kuduro, Space Suits

HILARIOUS! Sums up the final day of Carnaval 2011 in San Pedro, Belize, as Fat Tuesday proved to be one of the best days of painting, dancing and celebrating in the longest time. The comparsas (street dancing) were nothing short of spectacular as all the three groups brought their ‘A’ game to the table.

The San Pedro AIDS Commission celebrated the diverse cultures living in La Isla Bonita with a mixture of races coming together to celebrate the Carnaval Queen, while Doña Flora’s group played paparazzi, cops and lawyers making fun of the recent headlines of Mexican singer Kalimba and Pablo’s Girls saved their best performance for last. They introduced their version of Don Omar’s Danza Kuduro and BOY was it a crowd pleaser. At the end of the day the San Pedro Town Council honored the AIDS Commission with the Best Comparsa Group of all three days. Coming in second was Doña Flora’s group and Pablo’s Girls got third place. Congratulations to all three groups for putting on a SUPER show on all three days of Carnaval.

Innovative Carnaval Painting Technique

Carnaval Fat Tuesday

Ambergris Today awards Melody Sanchez Wolfe and Anny Sayarath with the Most Innovative Carnaval Painting Technique Award for their creativity. Nope, they are not spacesuits! Melody and Anny did not want to get painted as they solicited the street painters to help them create a work of art outside Melody’s Belizean Melody’s Art Gallery. With jump suits, ski masks and goggles, they stepped outside and had some fun. They got Gerry, teeth and all, very black! Thumbs up ladies!

Painting

The painting also got bigger on the last day of Carnaval 2011 as hundreds of revlers took to the streets to enjoy. Young, old and in between – everybody had a fantastic time until the late hours of the night. It was another spectacular Carnaval celebration. Now all goes back to normal, until next year!
