Oceana Holds Oil Exploration Public Forum

Oceana is a member of the Coalition to Save our Natural Heritage and it is dedicated to the protection of our marine resources by addressing serious national matter such as offshore oil development.  As part of their ongoing work with the Coalition, they keep informing and educating the general populace about the dangers of allowing exploration and drilling offshore and in our protected areas.

Oceana, in collaboration with the Coalition to Save our Natural Heritage and its local partner, Ambergris Caye Citizens for Sustainable Development (ACCSD) is hosting a series of activities in San Pedro Town with a view to update the citizenry on the status of oil exploration and drilling in our country.  The aim is for the people to learn about the oil issues, sign the petition for a referendum and equip them with sufficient information so as to know how to vote on this matter on referendum day.

The first of these events in San Pedro was the “Oil Exploitation Public Forum” that was held on Thursday, March 17, 2011 at 7:00p.m. at the Lion’s Den, San Pedro Town. Representatives from Oceana Belize discussed the oil contracts, the law and its implications for us, the environmental impacts of this industry and its socio-economic realities.
