There have been several complaints about businesses limiting, or withholding the sale of sugar to accommodate the sale of another commodity, and refusing to sell sugar. A press release issued by the Belize Bureau of Standards stated that the Supplies Control Unit is informing those involved in the distribution and retailing of sugar that by engaging in these practices they are committing an offence under the Supplies Control Act Subsidiary Regulation for Price Controlled Goods Section 8.
The Bureau says that any person that contravenes or fails to comply with these regulations shall be guilty of an offence against these regulations and shall on summary conviction be liable to a fine not exceeding $1000 or to imprisonment for a term not exceeding six months or both such fine and imprisonment.
