After a two-year term as president of the San Pedro Lions Club, Mrs. Melanie Paz proudly welcomed the new president for the club, Mrs. Marina Kay on Saturday, July 9, 2011, during the Installation Ceremony held at the San Pedro Lions Club.
Lion Mel Spain delivered the welcome address followed by Lion Ines Anderson read the Lions Code of Ethics to this in attendance. Master of Ceremony, Mr. Eiden Salazar then welcomed outgoing president, Mrs. Melanie Paz to the podium to deliver her speech in which she gave short account on the accomplishments of the Club during her term of presidency.
“I accepted this position in 2009 for a one year term and before I could blink, I was into my second year, and now it is over,” stated Mrs. Melanie Paz. “The San Pedro Lions Club, like all the clubs in Belize had been faltering in membership and activities, but I am proud to say that once again it is a very active club. It has gone from having ten members at meetings to almost 30. This shows that there is the true spirit of Lionism around us.”
Lion Pedro Salazar then conducted the official installation of the new board and president of the San Pedro Lions Club. The board includes: Marina Kay – President, Mel Spain – Vice President, Jorge Aldana – Secretary, Abel Guerrero – Treasurer, Viannie Perez, Stephen Manuel and Francisco Verde – Directors, Ines Anderson – Membership Chairperson, Jan Brown – Lion Tamer and Petey Palosa – Tail Twister.
The San Pedro Lions Club has been extremely active and involved with the community in the past two years, some of their accomplishments include:
*Hosting Costa Maya Contestants for Noche Sanpedrana
*Banquets for the Tres Pescado Tournament
*Lions Quest Program at Roman Catholic School
* Delivery of drums for trash and several elementary schools
*Hosting the Belize Mission Group for dental care
*Fundraisers for El Salvador, Haiti, Belize and Japan
*Bringing back BCVI to the island once a month for free eye clinics
*Renovation of the Mosquito Coast Park with new palapas, picnic tables, bathrooms and new playground.
*Donated stools for the lunch counter at RC School
*Donated 400 desks and 300 chairs to the San Pedro High School
*Donations to The Liberty Foundation and BCVI
*Renovations of the bathrooms at the Lions Den and the changing and extension of the bar roof.
*Countless fundraisers to assist people with medical needs (an average of $2,000 monthly)
*Bringing back the Lions Friday BBQ sales with the popular BINGO games
