The Greasy Pole is Back!

IT’S BACK! The revival of an old fun tradition that is synonymous with Belizean celebrations. But the Greasy Pole attraction had been on hiatus from our island celebrations for some apparent reason that we are not aware of! For the past couple town celebrations the San Pedro Town Council has managed to bring back the attraction that is The Greasy Pole!

The challenge is quite a crowd-pleaser! Hundreds flocked to the beachside at Central Park after the parade when a group of brave men took up the challenge to summit the Greasy Pole. It’s a 30-foot + pole all greased up with cooking lard. On top, a Belizean Flag that is waiting to be fetched; oh and there is a $500 prize for the winning group.

It took a group of about 10 men some five to six attempts to finally make it to the top! The secret is a strong base of men who can withstand the weight of all the others who climb on top of them. It’s a slippery situation, but a fun attraction that we are glad to see it not ‘slipping’ away from our celebrations!
