Island Divers Win Lion Fish Tourney

Maybe it was the weather, maybe it was the busy season, but there was not a big turnout for the Lion Fish Tournament that took place this past weekend as compared to past competitions. But what is evident is that Lion Fish are still plentiful in Belizean waters. Fishermen did bring in a fair amount of the menacing fish that is infesting the coral reef in the Caribbean.

Nevertheless, it was a great tournament with the Island Divers Belize team winning the coveted prize of MOST LION FISH caught at 167! The White Sands Dive Shop team took the prize for the biggest Lion Fish at 37cm and Smallest Lion Fish at 9cm. The Wahoo’s Lounge celebrated with a cooking competition and $10 sample plates for those wanting a taste.

Top Chef was Mar with Pina Colada Lion Fish
Second Place – Jaime “Chino” Vasquez with Lion Fish Pasta
Third Place – Waruguma Restaurant Wrapped Lion Fish with Christmas Rice

Props to the Wahoo’s Lounge for spearheading the event in collaboration with Ecomar, Coral Reef Alliance, Hol Chan Marine Reserve and The San Pedro Tour Guide Association (SPTGA).
