Local Airlines Mark Increase in Airfares for 2012

We have taken notice that both local airlines in the country, Tropic Air and Maya Island Air, have announced an increase in airfares that have become effective since the beginning of the New Year 2012.

The airlines credit the increase to climbing fuel prices around the world which make it especially hard on smaller airlines that consume large quantities of fuel. They have indicated that these unprecedented and sustained high prices have doubled in the past 12 months forcing them to follow in the footsteps of their industry colleagues around the world to implement a fuel surcharge to their airfares.

In Tropic Air’s release to their industry partners, they commented: “We do promise you that, as an airline, we always endeavor to give you the best value for money. As such, if we see sustained lower fuel costs, we will be sure to pass those savings onto you.”

Further increases may be necessary in the future if fuel prices continue to rise, but the public shall be informed prior to those further increases in due time. In Tropic Air’s case the increase in their airfares are added as a surcharge which can be taken away if and when fuel prices go down.
