Fire Destroys Home in DFC Area

A midmorning blaze completely destroyed a few residences in the DFC area, which has left a family homeless in the New Year. Shortly after 11a.m. on Saturday, January 7, 2012, the San Pedro Fire Department was alerted about the fire which the residents of the DFC area started battling before the fire truck arrived.

The small two-story structure and two other smaller homes, located behind Bessy’s Store, were completely engulfed in flames by the time the fire truck arrived. Residents in apartments next to the blaze, including owners of Bessy’s Store, were panicking to save their personal belongings and store contents as the fire threatened to cross over. Luckily a large concrete wall separated the buildings and prevented the fire from spread.

The eminent danger of the fire spreading was a possibility if it were not for the firemen who arrived just in time to bring the blaze under control. There are no fire hydrants in the neighborhood and the water reserves of both trucks were exhausted. The fire was completely extinguished with the help of a bucket brigade that was organized by volunteers who got water from waterlogged empty lots adjacent to the blaze.

Reports are that the house belonged to a single mother of two children who lost all their belonging, so the immediate need for them will be clothes. The cause of the fire is yet to be confirmed and updates will be posted as they become available.
