SPRCS gets New Picnic Area and Restrooms

On Monday, January 9, 2012, hundreds of students headed back to school as classes resumed from the Christmas break. Students of San Pedro RC School were delighted to come back to school, meet with friends and teachers and for break they were able to enjoy each other’s company under the newly built shaded picnic area.

Over the summer break the palapa under which students enjoyed a shaded break was mischievously burnt and the children had no place to enjoy their snacks as some of the picnic tables were also destroyed.

Owners of Canary Cove, a private residence located five miles of North Ambergris Caye, who have been visiting La Isla Bonita for years and have recently bought their home on North Ambergris Caye have decided to give back to the community they now call home.

They met with principal of San Pedro RC School, Mrs. Roxannie Kay, and decided to help out with the re-construction of the picnic area.  What was once a thatch-roofed palapa is now a cool shaded zinc roof picnic area. The zinc roofing was made with a special insulation material that absorbs the heat and keeps the picnic area cool. Along with the picnic shade, a donation of ten picnic tables was also given to the school.

Another major problem that the school was facing was that the teachers had no bathroom facilities and were using the student’s restroom. The re-constrution of a staff restroom was also completed and now consists of a male and female teachers’ bathroom. This facility will be available for teachers to use, as well as any visitor or other educators who come and assist the school.

Children were elated to have back a cozy place to enjoy their snacks and socialize. Much thanks to the owners of Canary Cove who not only have donated to the school but to the San Pedro Police Department and Tour Guide Association. Kudos guys!
