UB Students Shave heads for “Baldmiration” Cancer Awareness Campaign –
The 2012 Communication Skills class of the University of Belize’s Faculty of Education and Arts teamed up with the Office of the Special Envoy for Women and Children, the Belize Cancer Society and Jonze Unisex Salon to launch a public awareness campaign entitled “Baldmiration”. The class was inspired by Mrs. Kim Simplis Barrow’s decision to publicy share her fight against cancer as well as her brave, bold, beautiful and bald looks – a result of her chemo treatment. The students believe that Mrs. Barrow has emerged as a powerful message of hope for person living with cancer, battling cancer, surviving cancer or who may yet have to face cancer.
In solidarity, seven female students and one UB female lecturer bravely and publicly shaved their heads and join the bold and beautiful look to support all women who have or may lose their hair. Their message: it is okay to wear a wig if you’d like, but don’t feel you have to! We love the bold look! In support of the female shavers, 15 male UB students went bald. Meanwhile, another 100 UB students and lecturers dyed streaks of their hair pink and other cancer-ribbon associated colors in support of family, friends or colleagues who have battled with the disease. The hair streaking is a fundraising campaign being undertaken by Heather Jones of Jonze Unisex Salon in support of the Belize Cancer Society.

The public mass-shaving took place on Monday, March 19, 2012, at the UB faculty of Education and Arts in Belize City (Rooms 139) at 10:30 a.m. Students, along with the Belize Cancer Society representatives also appeared on Love TV’s Oapn Paki show on Sunday, March 18, 2012, and Krem TV’s Women at work on Monday, March 19, 2012.
The Communication Skills class thanks Mrs. Barrow for the boost to women’s self-concept and self-esteem as a result of her bold, brave and bald stance and are happy to help her and the Cancer Society in spreading the message of early detection.
Mrs. Barrow commends the students for the wonderful project saying that she is humbled by the overwhelming support of the Belizean public since her diagnosis. She thanks the brave young people for helping to spread the message of cancer awareness.
UB Students Shave Their Heads for Cancer Awareness
According to 7 news Belize, while the show of support has been overwhelming – it comes at a critical time for Kim Barrow. She’s about to leave to Miami to get surgery for her breast cancer – after which she’ll have to continue Chemotherapy treatment.
“I feel good, every day is better now. I’m getting ready now for my surgery and then after the surgery I still have radiation for 6 weeks,” stated Mrs. Barrow to 7 News Belize. “So it’s a long journey but I am staying positive. My message really is “Get Tested” it’s so very important to get tested and to be vigilant of your health.” Mrs. Barrow and the Prime Minister are expected to leave this weekend.
