Second Detainee Dies in San Pedro Police Custody

A second person has died in the hands of San Pedro Police this year as 38- year-old detainee Kevin “Bocco T” Myvette (aka Kevin Kelly) of Fairweather Street in Belize City was found dead in his holding cell at the San Pedro Police Station on Thursday, April 26, 2012, after 11p.m.

According to Police reports, 24-year-old- Felipa Estela Lamp was robbed in the vicinity of Central Park sometime around 10p.m. by Kevin Kelly who rode up on a bicycle on the beach and snatched a gold chain off her neck, a black and gold purse which contained $100 and a red and black cellular phone.

The Police and Belize Defense Force personnel were quick to apprehend Kevin Kelly and escorted him to the police station, but he managed to escape as they walked into the building. The police chased Kelly until they reached an area of the Four Sisters Plaza on Pescador Drive where they fired at least two shots; Kelly was not hit. Police report that Kelly was apprehended for the second time in a yard behind the Four Sisters Plaza after he fell and fainted trying to jump a fence.

Police state that Kelly was revived, handcuffed and while they were walking him to the police golf cart, he fainted. ASP Robinson commented that Kelly had fainted again once he was detained in his cell and observing that he was losing consciousness, Dr. Javier Zuniga was called for a medical checkup.

According to Dr. Zuniga, Kelly was motionless and nonresponsive when he arrived at the station and CPR conducted on him was futile. A pending post mortem will determine the exact cause of death. Eye witnesses to the crime have reported to Ambergris Today that the officers used excessive force while apprehending Kelly. ASP Robinson stated that a complete investigation will take place into the matter by officers of the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB).

Kelly had prior criminal records in San Pedro and Belize City. The first person, this year, to be found dead in a prison cell was Miguel Martinez after he was detained on February, 21, 2012.
