We have been seeing nothing but big happy smiles on the faces of school children all day today, the first day of classes. It’s back to school time for all the elementary schools and pre schools around the country today, Monday, September 03, 2012.
Children bearing their brightly colored school uniforms filled the streets this morning as they headed back to school after a beautiful summer vacation here in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. It’s back to hitting the books, getting back to old school buddies and enjoying all the great activities at school. We surely did not see anybody complaining, even though it meant the end of summer vacations.

The larger schools on the island reported an increase in enrollment with the San Pedro Roman Catholic Primary School indicating a student body of 903, Holy Cross Anglican School with 435 students (still accepting a few more) and San Pedro High School reporting 514 students. These are the larger schools on the island with an ever increasing enrollment each and every year.
During the summer vacations, a new building for the San Pedro R.C. School was constructed with donations coming from Canary Cove and the San Pedro Town Council. Work was sped up to also make renovations to other dilapidated classrooms at the government school, which received repairs and a new coat of paint by volunteers.
