When does 2+2=8? When the Rotary Club of Belize matches all funds donated to the Iron Cause for Iron Kids Program. Rotarian Jim Scott has been in serious training for the 2012 Iron Man Triathlon in Cozumel, Mexico, held on his 50th birthday, November 25, 2012. Together with Rotary Belize, Jim is raising donations for the Dorothy Menzies Child Care Center.

One might ask what this challenge is for, or what will be done with the money that is raised at the Dorothy Menzies Child Care Center. Well the DMCCC is undergoing a renovation project so as to provide a safer and more caring environment for the children to live in. The project is divided into two phases of which one is incomplete.
Phase 1 of the Project – This included the relocation of kitchen and dining facilities from the main accommodations building to the lower flat of an existing adjacent building. The renovation included the building of proper kitchen facilities for food preparation and delivery to the children. An indoor and outdoor dining area was allocated to provide for the safe and sanitary delivery of meals to the children. Work also addressed current drainage issues, replacement of appliances – refrigerator, kitchen appliances, and installation of fire extinguishers.
Phase 1 Cost: $17,000 Belize dollars –Completed!
Phase 2 of the Project – This will include the renovation of the main accommodations building. Activities include: Renovation of all bathroom facilities to provide for a clean and sanitary environment. This will include the proper assignment of bathroom facilities by sex and age group. Reallocation of dorm facilities is needed so as to provide for the separation of sexes and ages. The relocation of the kitchen and dining facilities will allow for additional dorm facilities. Provision of an activity area for recreational and educational activities, painting of building interior, replacement of old and faulty ceiling fans, replacement of faulty lighting and electrical fixtures, and upgrade of electrical wiring and panel to ensure safety of occupants, replacement of beds, provision of closet space, and replacement of broken and faulty windows.
Phase 2 Cost: $60,000 estimated
FUNDS NEEDED TO COMPLETE FULL RENOVATION!
The purpose for the project is to provide a safer, clean, and comfortable environment where children can enjoy a more homely and spacious accommodations. And for male and female children have a sense of dignity as the renovations allow for the separation of sexes and ages.
The project is managed through the phases by a sub-committee of the Rotary Foundation Committee with the assistance of site management by Consultant, Carlton Young of Young’s Engineering Consultancy Limited and the long-term oversight to be provided by the Board of the DMCCC.
