It was their first performance before heading to the United States of America and Canada to kick off their tour together; Danny Michel and Belize’s Garifuna Collective performed a free concert at Rojo Lounge, Azul Resort on Wednesday, June 12, 2013. The evening was a magical one filled with the unique blending of Danny Michel’s rock n’ roll influences with that of the Afro-Amerindian Garifuna Collective sounds.
Danny Michel teamed up with the Garifuna Collective to produce his tenth album which is being considered a musical gem. Billboard Magazine calls this record, “One of the finest musical works of our time. This is a career album.”
The album was recorded in Belize with local instruments. The first few tracks from the album feature traditional hand-made Garifuna drums, turtle shells and a donkey jaw bone. Danny states that his songs echo of Garifuna, rock, funk, and Caribbean music. It is Danny’s plunge at making an album unlike any he has ever made; it paid off because it has been nominated for a Juno Award.
It was a once in a life time event at Rojo Lounge as the Garifuna Collective performed sets as themselves and along with Danny with new music from his album titled “Blackbirds are Dancing Over Me”. Their performance was nothing short of spectacular as you can see that both artists have developed new musical styles and working together surely was one of the best decisions they have ever made.
“In Belize rehearsing with the Garifuna Collective and things could not be better. Having a life changing, bonding adventure of music and new friendships beyond my wildest dreams. My heart is gushing with excitement. Look out Canada! This is gonna be a ball.” – Danny Michel.
Danny Michel and The Garifuna Collective start their tour on June 20, 2013 at Minneapolis, Minnesota which runs through to August 10, 2013, in Waldport, Oregon, with performances in Canada as well. Click link for tour dates: http://www.cumbancha.com/events/garifunacollective
