91 March at San Pedro High Graduation

San Pedro High School which commenced with a twenty five student enrollment and graduated ten in its first class has passed with flying colors its mission statement – that of providing secondary education to a wider community. Founded in 1971 when there was a yearly average of two students going to high school in Belize City, this year SPHS marched 91 seniors up the aisle at the R. Angel Nuñez Auditorium. Graduation ceremonies and Commencement Exercises were held this Saturday, June 15, 2013, in a ceremony which has been described as historical with the largest graduation class ever.

Emcees Marceli McCorkle and Eric Donis first invited honor roll student and Salutatorian Gabriel Azueta to deliver the welcome address.  Principal Emil Vasquez assisted by Chairman of the Board Mr. Aljemiro ‘Milo’ Paz distributed the diplomas as well as many sports awards and honor awards.

The highlight of the ceremony was an extraordinary speech delivered by Giselle Flores Lobos who is English teacher and head of Language Department. Giselle remarked that exactly ten years ago and on the same date she was sitting there among the graduates of 2003. She stressed on love of Alma Mater and service to community and urged the graduates to move on in their studies with a mind of returning to their community and serving as doctors, nurses, business managers, entrepreneurs and yes, as teachers too.

“Dedicated teachers are difficult to find these days, and if graduates return to their Alma Mater, then there is greater hope for more and good teachers for the community of San Pedro,” commented Giselle Flores.

The Valedictory Address was delivered by highest marks graduate Monica Ack and the Rose Ceremony was led by Yvania Cab. Mr. Emil Vasques then delivered the school’s annual report which was followed by the Candle light Ceremony led by Shelly Mucul. The Class of 2013 then did a lovely rendition of the song Hall of Fame, which was followed by the Vote of Thanks by Briceydi Vanegas after which parents, relatives and friends gathered outside the auditorium to congratulate the graduates.
