It is not only during the annual San Pedro Cancer Walk that residents of Ambergris Caye show their support towards the non-profit organization. But it’s at the Walk that they come together on World Cancer Day, February 4, to show their solidarity to the community and share their common experiences with cancer.
The San Pedro Cancer Society once again organized the Cancer Walk this year to show the community that there is a strong group of people who are assisting cancer patients, supporting families affected by cancer and spreading information about cancer and treatment for the disease.
The organization in San Pedro holds various fundraisers throughout the year and holds blood drives to help special medical cases. They have also assisted with monetary donations in sending residents abroad for cancer treatment. Donations from the business community have also helped tremendously. At the conclusion of the Walk, Belize Bank and Castillos Hardware handed over donations of $320 and $500 respectively to the Cancer Society.
Members were also on hand to sell bumper stickers and raffle tickets. The raffle was held immediately after the walk; prizes were awarded to Melanie Paz (one large pepperoni pizza donated by Island Torch), Isela Graniel (one round trip ticket to Belize City by Tropic Air) and Ilsa Salazar (one smart cell phone by SMART). All the prizes were donated by the respective business.
