Belize Tourism Industry Association Holds Successful 29th Bi-Annual General Meeting

Thursday, July 10, 2014, Belize City, Belize – The Belize Tourism Industry Association held its 29th Bi-Annual General Meeting on July 9, 2014 at the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza.

BTIA members, dignitaries, industry partners and invited guests, were all part of another successful event held by the Association under the theme, “Promoting Sustainable Development in the Tourism Industry of Belize.” The meeting recapped the progress of the BTIA throughout the past six months, as well as highlights several issues currently affecting the industry.

BTIA President – Herbert Haylock, noted … “There is a lot to get done, to get into and to accomplish for your Association.  Our plate is full, but we have room for more.  We need everyone on board.  Everyone!  Fully committed and fully engaged!  He continued further, stating…”There is need for greater order in our tiny country.  We lack discipline, we lack willingness, we lack a truly shared vision embraced by both public and private sectors.”

The guest speaker – Mr. Guido Bauer, CEO of Green Globe – an international company that provides certification for the sustainable operations and management of travel and tourism companies and their related supplier businesses, enlightened the audience on the importance and promotion of sustainable growth.  As a developing destination, Belize must ensure to protect its natural, cultural and social resources to safeguard its unique visitor experience. He stressed the importance of improving the daily operations of the private sector to ensure further advancement in the status of our country as a noted leading sustainable destination.

Following the meeting, Mr. Bauer hosted a seminar focused on sharing the benefits of becoming a Green Globe member. Participants were able to network with local Green Globe members and share their interest on promoting sustainable tourism practices. The seminar participants were also able to see a live presentation by the Police and k-9 unit on safety and security. The live presentation was a hit with the audience as the unit’s role in ensuring a safe and secure environment for visitors and the nation were showcased.

The BTIA takes this opportunity to thank all persons who assisted in making this event a success; the BTIA Secretariat, the Best Western Belize Biltmore Plaza and most importantly, our Association sponsors: the Atlantic Group of Companies, Tropic Air and the Development Finance Corporation.
