Fire Victims Receive Donations from Community

The devastating fire on Sunday, July 6, 2014, in the Boca Del Rio Area gutted a total of seven buildings displacing 16 families with about 88 persons including children and adults. The Community of San Pedro, including the San Pedro Town Council, National Emergency Management Organization (NEMO), Belize Red Cross, San Pedro Lions Club and other NGO’s were quick to plan a radiothon and other activities to help out the families in need.

The San Pedro Town Council quickly found shelter for two families who didn’t have any relatives to stay with and the San Pedro Lions Club was quick to act and opened the doors to the Lions Den on Monday, July 7, 2014, for people to make food and clothing donations for the fire victims.

On Wednesday, July 9, 2014, The San Pedro Town Council, along with the San Pedro Lions Club and the Belize Red Cross, held a telethon/radiothon at the Reef Radio/TV to raise funds for the victims to start rebuilding their homes and collect more food items. The community of Ambergris Caye came strong with a total of $21,800 was donated at the telethon.

NEMO handed out a total of 23 mattresses, 16 gas tanks, 16 stove top, bed sheets, blankets, a set of cooking pots, cooking utensils, mop, broom and personal hygiene supplies to the head of each of the 16 families. The San Pedro Red Cross, along with the Belize Red Cross, got hygiene kits, blankets, baby kits, clothing and treated mosquito nets for the families.

Other agencies including The Rotary Club, Social Security and Belize Tourism Board have pledged their assistance to provide needed items for the duration of the relief efforts which is estimated to take about one month.
