Wreckage Part of Possible US Military Aircraft Found in San Pedro, Belize

Details are still unclear and officials continue to piece together information about the discovery of a large part of an aircraft that has been found floating by the reef off the island of San Pedro, Ambergris Caye, Belize.

On Saturday, February 7, 2015, island residents on a boat identified a large metal piece floating next to the barrier reef about a mile north of San Pedro Town, directly in front of the Tres Cocos Area. The large metal piece is believed to be part of a wreckage of a United States military aircraft due to marks and signage that has been identified on it.

Details are still very sketchy, but after the residents who found the wreckage piece called the Belize Coast Guard, American officials have been contacted in order to further investigations. After the plane wreckage was discovered during the early evening hours, the Belize Coast Guard conducted a search of the area early the following day but was not able to find any other pieces of a plane wreckage.

UPDATE: After many emails and calls to our office and taking a closer look at images of the wreckage found over the weekend, we can safely confirm that the piece of wreckage is not that of a US military plane but remnamts of a space rocket. In August 2014, two satellites were launched on the European Ariane Galileo ESA rocket and the piece discovered by the reef off Ambergris Caye is just part of the rocket that falls back to earth during its launch into space. Below are images of the rocket compared to the piece of wreckage found over the weekend. (Click to read more on Ariane Galileo Launch Failure)
