An early morning fire at Exotic Caye Beach Resort, located about a mile south of San Pedro Town, has left visiting tourists displaced as it destroyed three buildings of the resort on Wednesday, February 25, 2015.
Security personnel of the resort were there the first to become aware of the fire around 2:30a.m. that started in a utility building located at the back end of the resort which housed the laundry room. Staff of the resort then acted quickly to wake up and evacuate their guests and contacted the San Pedro Fire Department.
Fire quickly spread from the laundry room onto an adjacent concrete structure with a thatch roof. Security of the resort indicated that the fire fighters arrived around 20 minutes after they called in about the fire, in which two other buildings had caught on fire as well.
By the time the fire was brought under control, the second stories of all three buildings had suffered extensive damage. Nine units of the resort were destroyed, all of which were occupied by guests; luckily all of them were able to evacuate safely.
Management of Exotic Caye Beach Resort stated that their affected guests were all accommodated in nearby hotels. Some of them were able to salvage most of their belongings while others lost some items, including expensive electronics. The fire department states that the cause of the fire seems to be electrical; none of the buildings were insured.
