It’s not every day that you can look up at the trees and identify the Keel Billed Toucan in San Pedro, Ambergris Caye. This week the family at Victoria House resort is excited about the rare appearance of Belize’s National Bird within their property.
The Keel Billed Toucan is native to Belize but definitely not a common species on Ambergris Caye. Bird watchers travel to the mainland jungles of Cayo, Stann Creek, Toledo or the Belize Zoo to spot and marvel at the beauty of this magnificent bird.
Employees at Victoria House say that the toucan started coming to the property this week and can be seen sunning every morning up to around 10a.m. while it feeds and relaxes in the lush greenery of the property. It is easy to spot the toucan because of its distinct colorful and large beak and it flies around the main entrance of the property, next to the reception and maintenance area.
Janet Woollam of Victora House told Ambergris Today that the last time they had such wonderful visitors was after a big storm about four years ago. At that time it was a pair of toucans that were most likely displaced after the storm. This week’s visitor seems to be traveling alone, again spotted on the island after stormy weather.
