Belize Welcomes ACP Resolution on Belize Guatemala Dispute

Press Release – Belmopan, April 28, 2016 – The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Belize welcomes the Resolution adopted by the Council of Ministers of the African, Caribbean and Pacific Group (ACP) on the subject of the Recent Tensions Between Belize and Guatemala.

The ACP Council met for their 103rd Session on 26-27 April 2016 in Dakar, Senegal. At the conclusion of their Session on 27th April, the ACP Council of Ministers adopted a Resolution wherein they express their commitment to Belize’s territorial integrity and their concerns over the tensions along Belize’s border with Guatemala, as well as their support for the need for confidence building measures for the Sarstoon River.

They also support efforts at finally resolving Guatemala’s claim to Belize at the International Court of Justice, in accordance with the Special Agreement of 2008.

Belize was represented at the 103rd Session of the ACP Council by Ambassador Dr. Dylan Vernon, who used the opportunity of the Session to fully brief the Council of the recent tensions along the border of Belize arising from the pronouncements of the Government of Guatemala and movements of Guatemalan military near its border with Belize. This in line with the Government of Belize’s efforts to ensure that the international community is fully informed about what is the true situation between Belize and the Republic of Guatemala.

The ACP Group was established in 1975 and is one of the largest groups of developing countries with 79 Member States across three continents. The objectives of the ACP are to foster unity and solidarity among its Members, contribute to the sustainable development in ACP countries and promote peace and stability in a free and democratic society.
