Teachers Hold Prayer Vigil as Strike Goes on 9th Day

On Thursday evening, October 13, 2016, at the R. Angel Nunez Auditorium, teachers of San Pedro held a prayer vigil to invoke God’s blessings on the nation of Belize. They also prayed for guidance for the Government and the National Teachers’ Union (BNTU) to reach terms of agreement that would be amicable to both parties.

Once again teachers expressed their solidarity with their union and repeated their willingness and eagerness to go back to the classroom once Prime Minister Dean Barrow agrees to honor the main points on good governance that the teachers are asking for.

It was also yesterday that PM Barrow agreed to meet with the Belize National Teachers Union with hopes to come out with an agreement and an end to the strike. In the end, The BNTU was not satisfied with the outcome of the meeting and decided to finish off the week with strike action; making it the 9th day that public schools remain closed.

As we post, we understand that the meeting with the Prime Minister was cordial but not very successful. The Prime minister is NOT budging to some of the eight main points that the teachers are asking for, including their 3% salary increase.

The union will be going back to its membership over the weekend to plan its next plan of action.
