Located off the coast of Belize, Blackadore Caye or better known to Belizeans, as Leonardo DiCaprio’s Island is soon to be the world’s leading example of green hospitality with an aim to restore and revitalize the surrounding ecosystem. After having received the green light by Belize’s Department of Environment, the Blackadore Group has now revealed the new look of the eco resort.
DiCaprio and his team have spent the last six months gathering feedback from local stakeholders and citizens on the original project design. The final design reflects the input of the surrounding community on every aspect of the project, including even the removal of overwater structures that garnered great design acclaim but caused concern for just a few local environmentalists.
Jean Michel Gathy best known for his work with Aman and One&Only is the lead design architect. Jean’s work has remained modern with natural materials such as wood and marble, however he was inspired by Belize’s ancient Mayan ruins.
Here is what the New Blackadore Caye Plans Promise
Since it is main purpose is to conserve and protect, the island’s infrastructure has been designed under a unique conservation framework developed by top biologists and ecologists who have studied ways to support and preserve the island’s habitat and biodiversity during construction.
The development’s design will restore and reinforce Blackadore Caye by replanting mangrove, replacing invasive species with native species, enhancing soil and habitat and creating additional armature for reef and fish breeding.
The project will seek to demonstrate how to stabilize a quickly eroding landscape through ecological shoreline protection.
Blackadore Caye Development Group have dedicated their time in ensuring that this is a eco-green friendly development to the surrounding fisheries, small businesses and local communities.
Over half of the island has been set aside as a protected wildlife preserve. All power used will be sourced from renewable energy and water will be provided through rainwater collection and onsite water treatment.
Blackadore Caye will feature a total of 36 bookable resort bungalows, 36 residential Estate Homes that has been estimated to be fully complete in late 2018.
There are no specific parcel prices or room rates but the resort is expecting to create 400 permanent jobs, from hotel staff to workers for surrounding organic farms. Its projected revenue is roughly 400 million Belize dollars over the next 20 years.
