Twenty five individuals living in San Pedro and Caye Caulker have received wheelchairs donated by the Wheelchair Foundation of California on December 6, 2016 at the San Pedro Lions Den.
Residents of the San Pedro and Caye Caulker communities attended this event. San Pedro Mayor Daniel Guerrero gave his gratitude, along with Mr. Glenn Perry from the Wheelchair Foundation. Eiden Salazar, San Pedro Red Cross Board President, was master of ceremonies for the evening.
Over the past months, the Wheelchair Foundation officials have been working with the San Pedro Branch of the Belize Red Cross and the medical staff on the islands to compile the list of individuals who need wheelchairs.
The Wheelchair Foundation raises money and distributes free wheelchairs world-wide. The group has brought a shipment of wheelchairs to Belize and San Pedro several times in the past. The group’s most recent donation was in 2009 when 35 chairs were brought to San Pedro for distribution.
The Wheelchair Foundation has delivered 1.1M wheelchairs to 156 countries worldwide. In 2009, 50 volunteers from Northern California, the largest number of volunteers to participate and attend a distribution event worldwide, delivered 260 wheelchairs to the country of Belize.
The Wheelchair Foundation is a nonprofit organization leading an international effort to create awareness of the needs and abilities of people with physical disabilities, to promote the joy of giving, create global friendship, and to deliver a wheelchair to every child, teen and adult in the world who needs one, but cannot afford one. For these people, the Wheelchair Foundation delivers Hope, Mobility and Independence.
