Belize’s Hook Line and Sinker Places Third at Mahahual Fishing Tournament

This past weekend many Belizeans traveled to the neighboring town of Mahahual, Mexico to compete in the annual Copa Gobernador Mahahual Fishing Tournament.” Five boats from San Pedro and one from Caye Caulker proudly represented Belize from May 5 to May 7, 2017.

Copa Gobernador is a deep sea fishing tournament in which the boat that brings in the biggest fish wins. Many aim to catch a Blue Marlin for its size can guarantee them the win.  

Hook Line and Sinker” captained by Kevin Kelly along with Kim Kelly, Josue Reyes, Albie Godoy and Hugo Mayer from San Pedro placed third in the tournament. They took home the winning prize of a four-wheeler. Their catch of a 40lb White Marlin and a 14lb Mahi-mahi placed them at the top of more than 30 boats that competed.

In 2013, Hook Line and Sinker” won first place in this same tournament where they brought home a car after winning with a 316lb Blue Marlin.

First and second place were won by Bad Boys” and Toledo” respectively, both from Mexico. This is the second year Bad Boys” wins making it back-to-back champions. Caye Caulker Frenchies” placed fifth and Rick Marin Real Challengers” placed seventh.
