Queen's Baton Relay to Arrive in Belize This Week

The Queen’s Baton has journeyed through all the African and Caribbean countries. Its next stop will be Belize, from August 2nd – 6th.

The Baton will be arriving at the Philip Goldson International Airport at 12:30pm on August 2nd, 2017. Members of the Belize Olympic and Commonwealth Games Association (BOCGA), Honorable Beverly Williams, Mr. Jorge Espat, will welcome the team. CEO of the PGIA, and Mrs. Dian White, Chairperson of Ladyville.

Immediately following a brief meet and greet with our invited guest and the media. The Cycling Federation of Belize will start the first leg of the relay that will visit, Belize City, Orange Walk and the Chiquibul National Park.

Cyclists will ride the Baton from the PGIA to Belize City. At the Flag monument the cyclists will be met by Belize City Mayor Darrell Bradley, the mayor will start the running section of the relay onto Freetown Road. He will then hand off the Baton to the athletes and students who will continue the relay on Freetown Road, right onto Douglas Jones Street, left onto North Front Street, right over Swing Bridge and onto Albert Street finishing at the House of Culture. At the House of Culture, there will be a brief Welcome Ceremony for the Queen’s Baton and its team.

On August 3rd, the BOCCGA and the QBR team will be traveling to Chiquibul National Park along with Mr. Rafael Manzanero and staff members of FCD. Rangers of FCD will join the Belize Cadet Corp and they will relay the Baton to the ruins of Caracol. The team will then travel to Las Cuevas Research Station (LCRS) where a plaque will unveiled showing Belize’s commitment to the Queen’s Commonwealth Canopy (QCC).

August 4th, the CGA and the QBR team will travel to Orange Walk Town. Mayor of Orange Walk Town, Kevin Bernard along with Hon. Elodio Aragon and Hon. John Briceño will welcome the Baton. The relay will start in front of the Central Park on Queen Victoria Ave, left onto Cinderella Street, right onto Fonseca Street, left onto Stadium Street, left into George Price Ave, left onto San Antonio Road, onto Bakers Street, left onto Main Street and finishing at the Banquitas House of culture, where there will be a cultural presentation.

On August 6th the QBR team will depart Belize en route to Guyana.
