Alberto Nunez Laid to Rest after Island’s First State Funeral

A state funeral is a public funeral ceremony, observing the strict rules of protocol, held to honor people of national significance. This  honor was bestowed to Don Alberto “Beto” Nuñez, who was the fifth Mayor of San Pedro Town and who served for two terms. Don Beto, as he was popularly called, died on December 8, 2017, at the age of 83.

Members of the San Pedro Police force provided the Guard of Honor and Pall Bearers were members of the San Pedro PUP Marshals. The Belize flag covered and decorated the coffin and a PUP flag led the procession from the Seventh Day Adventist Church to St. Peter’s Cemetery.

A very warm and solemn service was held at the Adventist Church with singing by Jackie Halliday, Dora Gonzalez, and Ezequiel Gomez. Prayers and sermon were delivered by Pastor Ernesto Barahona. Mayor Daniel Guerrero of San Pedro offered condolences and reflections on the contributions to Don Beto and a grandson Andres “Andy” Nunez delivered a heartwarming eulogy. 

The People’s United Party was represented by Mr. Jose Mai, Deputy Party Leader, PUP Marshall’s, PUP women’s Group. It was a historic state funeral for San Pedro to honor a man who lived his entire life to the service of his village and Town. Ambergris Today was there to capture the spirit and emotions of family and friends who honored Don Beto and will truly miss him. Rest in Peace Don Beto Núñez.
