Fisheries Department Reminds Public of Illegal Poaching of Sea Turtles

The Department hereby reminds the public that in accordance with Section 10 of Statutory Instrument No. 66 of 2002, under the Fisheries Act Chapter 210 of the Laws of Belize Revised Edition 2000-2003:

• No person should interfere with any marine turtle nest

• No person should have in possession any marine turtle of the following species:

a) Eretmochelys imbricate (Hawksbill Turtle)

b) Carretta carreta (Loggerhead Turtle)

c) Chelonia mydas (Green Turtle)

d) Dermochelys coriacea (Leatherback Turtles)

e) Lepidochelys Kemp (Kemp Ridley)

f) Lepidochelys Kemp (Olive Ridley)

• No person shall buy, sell, take or have in his possession any turtles, part of turtles or articles made of any part of turtle or turtles eggs

Any person found in possession of sea turtles will be prosecuted in accordance with section 14A (1) of the Fisheries Regulation, Chapter 210 of Subsidiary Laws of Belize Revised Edition 2000-2003
