Kids in Action – Diving into Summer Fun!

For the past ten years the San Pedro Tour Guide Association (SPTGA) in collaboration with PADI, the largest diving organization, and the Hol Chan Marine Reserve provide island kids the opportunity to explore the underwater world and learn to scuba dive.

Diving is a fulfilling, life-changing and educational experience and 20 students ages 12-15 will be working towards their Junior Open Water Diver certifications so they engage with marine life, build character and self-confidence, and form a greater appreciation for the planet. PADI is proud to support such an enriching experience by supplying Open Water Diver manuals, course completion certificates, and more.

On Monday, July 16, 2018, the camp officially kicked off as students were presented with their Open Water Diver Manuals and officially introduced to their dive instructors. Students will be doing a clean-up at Mosquito Coast Park on Friday, July 27 and their last dive and graduation will be on Saturday, July 28, 2018.

The SPTGA is also collaborating with other conservation and awareness programs on the island. Children participating in programs by Hol Chan and other conservation programs continue to engage through the dive camp and can better assist in such programs such as Reef Check, mangrove reforestation, sea turtle monitoring and other programs as part of the Hol Chan outreach program.
